Shopping Tips For a Modest Wardrobe
Summer is here! As temperatures rise, it seems the hemlines of all our favorite pieces are rising right along with them.
Staying trendy but modest can feel like trying to get a camel to go through the eye of a needle. Especially since the clothing racks at all our favorite stores are now being filled with crop tops, barely there shorts, and skin-tight bodycons.
Is it challenge? Yes
Can it be done? Absolutely.
Remember, we can do all things through Christ, Sis.
You’ve probably been wondering how to slay at church while also avoiding these looks from Sister Charlene.
Here are some shopping tips for a modest wardrobe.
1.Shop in the Men’s section
Admit it, you are completely guilty of stealing your dad’s or boyfriend’s shirt at least once or twice in your lifetime and passing it off as your own. Remember how soft and comfortable it felt?
Since we are beholden to the ten commandments, perhaps instead of robbing your hubby or dad of his favorite button down, next time just head to your favorite store and check out what’s trending in the men’s section.
Your personal style will play a factor in the pieces you’re drawn to but whether your style is street, preppy, classic, or hipster, there is something for everyone.
By nature, garments made for the fellas have a looser, more relaxed fit. This is perfect for creating those effortless but contemporary looks. Not only will the clothes give you a more modest fit, but in general men clothing are less expensive and made from better material.
Joggers, button downs, graphic tees, jeans, and slacks are among some of the things that you can snatch in the men’s sections. Assuming that you are not trying to achieve the tomboy look, you may want to add some accessories to add some feminine touches to your outfits. For example if you are wearing a men’s button down, try pairing it with a cute chain link clutch, some necklaces, and heels.
2.Shop a Couple Sizes Too Big
Maybe shopping in the men’s section is a bit too daring for you. If you don’t feel comfortable shopping in areas where you might be the only one with two X chromosomes, that’s okay. Stick to the female section but shop sizes that are bigger than what you would normally wear.
Let’s say you are a size small and you see this really cute dress that you really love but it’s too tight and short. Instead of just re-racking this dress in disappointment and defeat, look for the same dress two sizes up.
This trick is my favorite modest hack. I am a medium and I love purchasing XL or sometimes even XXL items. If you are going to try this trick, be aware that this works best for shirts and dresses. Proceed with caution when buying oversized pants lest they fall off during an intense praise break.
With this trick, you get to wear all of your favorite styles while still staying within modest boundaries. Plus, nothing screams effortlessly chic more than an oversized shirt paired with some simple jeans or even an oversized dressed. Talk about looking like you just came off a runway!
When trying this remember that not all oversized clothes are created alike. Be particularly conscious of how the pieces fit around your arms and shoulder area in order to make sure you are not sacrificing style in the name of modesty. A good rule of thumbs is to stick to only two or three sizes too big. Anything bigger can make you look like you just wrapped yourself in some rags before walking out the door.
3.Layering Is Your Friend.
Every fashionista knows that layering is always a great way to spruce up any outfit with some added personality and dimension. Not only that, but layering also gives you a chance to redeem pieces that would otherwise have to be thrown in the lake of fire.
Here’s a basic rule of thumbs to go by: if you are wearing something really tight, or borderline too short, layer it with an outer layer to diverge the attention. You can throw on a kimono, cardigan, blazer, shawl, or duster.
If you are wearing something that is revealing too much skin, particularly in the chest and shoulder area, layer it with an inner layer to cover up some flesh. You can prime it with a basic tee underneath, a bell-sleeved blouse, a chic turtleneck, or a collared shirt among many other options.
These are just a few tips and tricks to keep in mind when you are trying to honor the Lord with your clothes. It’s completely okay to love fashion and have a desire to wear cute clothes but let it end there. The clothes you wear should never be inspired to highlight or bring ungodly attention to your body and with these shopping tips for a modest wardrobe, you can avoid that.
