Relationship Over Religion: Date Ideas For You and God

When I first began walking intentionally with Jesus, I would often hear people say that Christianity was more about relationship than religion. But what did that mean? Religion is “the belief in and worship of a superhuman controlling power, especially a personal God or gods.” As Christians, do we believe and worship our God? Well, yes. Therefore, Christianity was a religion to me. It wasn’t until I started watching videos on how to hear God’s voice that I learned the key difference between religion and relationship. I began to learn that religion focuses on one’s works to become “right” or “favorable” to the deity or god they worship. However, as Christians we are not bound by practices or customs in an effort to make us “right” with God or to make Him love us more. We are already loved and are now called to obey God. The will to obey Him comes from us loving Him back.

“If you love Me, keep My commandments.” [John 14:15]

If you want to love Him better and live according to His will, you need to get to know Him better. And if you’re wondering how, here’s something to consider: How do you grow closer to your significant other or your best friend? You usually spend a lot of time with them. You may spend time learning their character. You may spend time learning their likes and dislikes. Or you simply may just spend time being in their presence without saying much of anything. Just you two being together is establishing intimacy. I realized that we can do the same thing with God. In the same way we like having a good time with our loved ones, God wants to have a good time with us too. It’s time to start establishing intimacy with the One who loves you more than anything. Here are some cool suggestions to try:

1.Explore The Outdoors Together

Sometimes taking time out of your day to take a walk around outside can be so refreshing. Next time you go walking, decide to take Jesus with you. I’ve tried this and I loved it! As I’m walking, I’ll be consciously thinking to Him about the weather, issues I’m struggling with, or even what I’m going to eat for dinner. Sometimes, it’s random but I really just try to enjoy the scenery as I walk with the Savior. If you are not too fond of the outdoors, you can go to the mall or a shopping plaza and walk around with Him in the same manner.

2. Take Him On A Dinner Or Coffee Date

Recent research has shown that one of the most common first dates that couples tend to go on are either to a coffee shop or a casual dinner. So if you are a faith-filled foodie that loves to eat or a Christian that loves coffee, going out to a restaurant or to a coffee shop would be perfect for you. Ask Him to make His presence known to you and He may reveal Himself in different ways. You may even hear Him speak to you!

3. Meet Him In the ‘Secret Place’

For all of my introverts out there, don’t worry. If you are not one that likes to go out and prefer to staying in, that’s okay. We are all called to retreat to a secret place to establish intimacy with God. This is a place where we close out the entire world and retreat to pray to our Father in secret. In scripture, Matthew 6:6 says “But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.” Here is where you can let it all out, cry out, and find out more about God while finding out more about yourself. In this place, not only can intimacy be established but identity in Christ can be revealed. Give him your timidness, talk to Him about your introverted personality. Talk to Him about what bothers you. Ask Him those deep questions you’ve been burning to ask. But let’s be clear, this place is not just for introverts. Extroverts you should have a secret place with God, as well. You can make this time as fun as you want to. You can sing, dance, journal, or pray in this secret place with the Lord. Let your extroverted personality shine during this time.

This entire walk with Jesus is all about love. As you spend more time with Him, allow Him to teach you about who He is. He is love and He wants you to love Him back.

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind.” [Luke 10:27]
