One Day at a Time
With every sunrise, follows a sunset.
A moment in time when the earth turns from light
and slumber beneath the blanket of night.
But as our world loses light, not all of us can sleep.
Some of us are stuck holding on to our knees, trying so hard to dream.
Some wish to escape the night and skip to the day, it’s become routine.
A routine we have attached ourselves to because it is all we know,
it’s all we’ve been told.
Told to hold out and wait for the day, but that only keeps our growth at bay.
There is no growth when we wait out our issues
when we tremble and hide and stay locked inside.
We must, instead, learn to face that fear.
We must get up and say to ourselves, “I am not afraid.”
For that, in itself, becomes our first step.
We’ve got to learn to take things one day at a time.
It’s not always simple, but listen when I say that it is worth it.
For no one said it was easy, yet no one said it was impossible.
Ease your mind, take a moment to breathe.
Inhale, exhale, and think.
You’ve got this, you’ve got beautiful moments ahead of you,
and if you think that it’ll be easier to cut this journey short,
let me tell you that you couldn’t be further from wrong.
For beautiful moments are not in sunsets or materialistic things,
beautiful moments are found when you take that first step.
Take a deep breath, know it’s okay to cry.
God’s got a plan for you, you’ve just got to trust that there is, and always will be
a brighter side to this life.
But light doesn’t shine unless there’s something dark.
We just need to learn not to focus on that part,
and instead on our hearts.
For as we open up our hearts, we begin to see,
that there is beauty in every moment taken in as we breathe.
We recognize that these things take one day at a time.
And we learn that if 24 hours is all we’ve got,
We accept it’s all we need, and we find that there’s no end to the possibilities.
We can run,
we can scream,
we can laugh,
we can sing.
For with each day comes new opportunities,
to learn that language, to write that book, make new friends,
take time to breathe and look.
At this serene moment you’ve been given;
Will you walk away or will you take the day in.
Inhale, exhale, breathe. Take a moment to ease your mind,
and learn to live this life one day at a time.
