Living Healed, Even When You’re Sick

The Bible says in Isaiah 53:5 (ESV) “But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and by his wounds, we are healed.” This scripture suggests healing isn’t something we have to wait for, but rather that it is accessible to us now. But what happens when you’re still sick? What happens when you stand on the word of God and you still get a bad diagnosis? What do you do when you’re standing on faith and the outcome still isn’t favorable?
I know this struggle first hand. Between June of 2018 and April of 2019, I was dealing with a serious health scare that completely shook my faith. I watched my health steadily decline in drastic ways for reasons doctors struggled to pinpoint for quite some time. A series of alarming symptoms led to an array of medical tests and procedures. I found myself stuck in between the reality of what was happening and how terribly I felt, and the truth of God’s Word that told me I was already healed.
It was a long and hard journey, but I was able to make it through until my physical body reflected the healing God promised me. While there is no one size fits all for coping with sickness, I found some ways during my own health struggle to live healed despite the sickness that dwelled within my body.

Don’t Surrender To Your Symptoms

Early on in my journey, I must admit that I surrendered to my sickness. I felt poorly and I allowed how I felt to consume me. At some point I decided that I wasn’t doing myself any justice by wallowing in sorrow and sickness. I may have been sick, but I was tired of looking sick and allowing my sickness to become my identity.
I made it a point to make myself look nice each day- dress up a bit (no yoga pants or leggings), put on makeup, curl my hair, etc. For me, when I look nice I immediately start to feel better. I also started to change my diet and workout within my means. Again, knowing I was eating well and doing something positive for my body made me feel better. The final step I took was to get informed and seek naturopathic methods for coping with my symptoms as my doctor’s worked to first figure out and then treat my ailment. Incorporating essential oils and meditation to my daily routine helped to elevate my spirits, change my mindset for the positive, and also help with the physical symptoms I was experiencing.

Affirm The Word

Despite how I felt and what the doctors told me, I was determined to meditate on God’s Word which told me I was healed. I had scriptures posted all over my wall and I was reading the word almost obsessively, and prayer became my second language. Every time I felt or noticed a symptom associated with my ailment, I would speak the Word. Every morning I woke up, I would read those scriptures on my wall. Every time I would get a report or test result that wasn’t optimistic I would acknowledge what was said, but combat it with a scripture.
The Bible says that life and death lie in the power of the tongue (Proverbs 18:21), so I determined that my tongue would speak nothing but life. I knew that while it wasn’t the case in the moment, if I continued to speak good health then good health would manifest in my life. And though it took some time, that is exactly what happened.

Faith Over Fear

Overcoming fear is by far one of the hardest things to do. Fear is an instinctual human reaction, but it is also a liar that will keep you paralyzed. Faith is not the absence of fear, it’s the choice to not let fear keep you from the future.  You have to decide that you will not let fear hold you captive despite the fact that what you see in your health fails to align with what you believe.
When you’re afraid because of what you feel or what you’ve been told, don’t give into that feeling. Cast your cares on God because He cares for you (1 Peter 5:7). He will strengthen you and grace you to navigate your journey.
There is nothing our God cannot do. The same God who healed people in the Bible with a simple word or touch is just as powerful today. Your healing is already yours, you’re simply awaiting the manifestation of that healing. So stand firmly on the Word, and let God empower you to face fear and your illness head on. Remember, whatever you conquer you then possess new levels of authority over. Once you’ve conquered sickness you’ll have authority over illness in brand new way. Plus, the testimony of how you triumphed over something designed to take you out is going to bless and encourage those watching you. Stay encouraged and remember that all your help comes from the Lord and Him alone.
