My God, Why Have You Forsaken Me?

“God, my God!
Why would you abandon me now?
Why do you remain distant,
refusing to answer my tearful cries in the day
and my desperate cries for your help in the night?
I can’t stop sobbing. Where are you, my God? – Psalms 22: 1-2

For many of us, these word are more than just a verse in the bible- it is a line straight from our real life conversations with God.

Maybe you’re going through a financial crisis where you’re at an all time low.

The doctor’s reports keep getting progressively worse.

You’re dealing with the lost of loved one.

You’re marriage or relationship is falling apart

Or you’re consumed with failure, disappointment, or fear …

I don’t know what your specific situation is. I don’t know in what ways you feel like the Lord has turned a deaf ear to you as you cry out in agony.

But Jesus does . . .

And he can completely relate.

Matter of fact, he moaned those very same words, My God, My God Why have you forsaken me?, while hanging on the cross.

Yes, even the perfect son of God understands what it feels like to feel that the father has turned a blind eye to his pain. The craziest part is that Jesus was in the perfect and absolute will of the father yet he still suffered and endured pain..

Therefore, don’t always think that your suffering is punishment for a mistake you’ve done and never count it as evidence of the absence of God. Rather, consider it evidence of your closeness to Christ.

Romans 8:17 tells us that if we share in his sufferings, we may also share in his Glory. The pain and discomfort you feel now, is nothing compared to the blessings, power, and nearness to God that you’ll reap through this.

Shortly after saying those words death overtook Jesus and He found himself in Hell… If he thought the cross was a bad place to be, he probably felt even worse there …

Now, things may have gotten worse for him for a moment but because he continued on fighting and refused to give up, not only did he find victory in his darkest place, but God also resurrected Him from that situation.

And God can do the same in your life.

This is not to convince you that everything will magically become great tomorrow- I can’t know if that is true… What I do know though is that God is still with you, he has not abandoned you, and he remains close to his brokenhearted.

Just as he was there fighting with Jesus in Hell as his situation grew worse, so is he there fighting for you in your situation.

Just as he resurrected Jesus from the grave, so will he resurrect those dead things in your life where you feel like all hope is lost. . .

We can’t judge Christ’s story from that one chapter in the bible where he was seemingly defeated. Likewise, don’t judge your story based on this one gloomy chapter in your life. This is only a mere part of the whole story and there will be many other chapters that will prove God’s glory in your life.

Don’t believe the lying voice that is telling you that God has given up on you, changed his mind about you, got tired of you, or for some reason or another decided to walk away from you.

Maybe other people in your past decided one day to just abandon you, or cut you off… but that is not the type of God we serve.

“God is not human, that he should lie, nor a human being, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfill?”- Numbers 23:19

Surely God will finish and complete every good work that he has started in you. Just keep pushing as He fights for you beloved daughter of Christ!
